Mr. Unlucky’s Almanack

Do the aphorisms and observations of Benjamin franklin and his Poor Richard still apply, or are we beyond hope and salvation?

The demons of the sporting world all decided to attack at once, sparing virtually no sport.

To wit:  In baseball, a much-hated and suspected steroid-abuser named Barry Bonds is about to break the home run record set by Hank Aaron, close friend and confidant of MLB Commissioner Bud Selig.  Selig ain’t happy.

More:  In football, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is under federal indictment for organized dog fighting and cruelty to animals.  He could be in the slammer for the rest of his would-be career if convicted.

However, that’s still a better fate than some of his dogs, whom he allegedly had executed in horrible ways if they didn’t learn to fight well.

Finally: In the NBA, an ongoing investigation into now-resigned referee Tim Donaghey seeks to uncover whether through his officiating he helped pad scores of games for the Mafia.  A shaken Commissioner David Stern is holding a press conference to effect some damage control even as I write this.

I guess that leaves the MLS and soccer celeb David Beckham to save the sporting world.

Ironic, isn’t it?  The sport that no one likes is now the cleanest, or maybe just the least looked into.
