Mr. Unlucky’s Almanack

Do the aphorisms and observations of Benjamin franklin and his Poor Richard still apply, or are we beyond hope and salvation?

Now, we’ve got North Korea saying it’s going to set off a nuclear weapon and destabilize Asia, and we’ve got the GOP freaking out over Congressman Mark Foley’s indiscretions, but to me, that’s just normal stuff. The really big news was that the Feds would quit intercepting prescription drug shipments from Canada.

Believe me, had it not been for Canada and its cheaper drug delivery system, I would’ve been desperate after losing my health coverage. What with three hereditary conditions–hopeless stupidity, incurable lust and insatiable hunger–I would’ve been a dead man without Canada. (Actually, those conditions apply, but the three I need drugs for are more normal.)

I’m no believer in let’s-create-rationing socialized medicine “solutions,” but you have to make medical care at least remotely possible for those of us who have prematurely entered the 21st century as non-corporate crooks and non-welfare crooks. Paying for a doctor’s visit isn’t that bad, but paying for five drugs a day–or a heart attack or stroke–is definitely a bank account killer, if not an actual killer.

“Sir, you have no insurance? We can’t treat you here until you sign this waiver for your home, property and first-born.”

If you’re lucky and survive the heart attack/stroke and live to pay your bills, you can declare bankruptcy and keep your first-born. Maybe.

However, have you checked out that glorious bankruptcy law that the Republicans passed and Bush signed? My eternal debt of admiration goes to Bill Clinton, who, in his one moment of lucidity, vetoed the same bill when he was in office.

Even power-hungry Democrats can sometimes see the light.
